CANINE GOOD CITIZEN: It’s for everybody!

The American Kennel Club created the Canine Good Citizen (or CGC, for short) program in 1989 to promote responsible dog ownership and to encourage the training of well-mannered dogs. Dogs that pass the CGC test have proven that they are “good citizens” in the community. In fact, many communities and insurance agencies will give special dispensation to dogs that have passed the test, allowing homeowners to get lower insurance premiums, or allowing owners to own breeds of dogs that would normally be banned from their community because of breed-specific legislation.
The idea behind the CGC program is to provide a foundation for future training of your dog. But the truly wonderful thing about this program is that even though it’s offered by the AKC, any dog regardless of heritage (mixed breed, purebred, rare breed) can earn the title!
