The Recall as a Foundation Exercise

To succeed in any of the obedience classes, you must have a reliable recall. The physical definition of a recall in the context of obedience is that the dog ‘reconvene when summoned.’ Simply put, this means your dog comes to you when he’s called. Every time a dog is coming towards (returning) to the handler, he is in essence performing a recall. The recall is a foundation exercise, meaning it is a principle part of many obedience exercises, embedded in various forms:
- The Drop on Recall is a Novice Recall with a ‘down’ thrown in along the way
- The Broad Jump exercise is a recall over an obstacle
- After retrieving any item, the dog is required to return it to the handler. Coming back to the handler is the recall portion of the exercise
